McKinney Vento
The general term homeless means that individuals lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes anyone who, due to lack of housing, lives:
Doubled up with friends or relatives (due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason)
In emergency or transitional shelters
In motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds
Abandoned in hospitals
In cars, parks, public places, bus/train stations, or abandoned buildings
As an unaccompanied youth (children not in the physical custody of a legal parent/guardian/state agency)
Migratory children living in any of these conditions
Families in transition should know that:
Homeless children have the right to attend school
You do not need a permanent address to enroll your child in school
Homeless children have the right to stay in their home school at the parent(s) discretion
Your child cannot be denied school enrollment just because school records or other enrollment documentation is not immediately available
Your child has the right to transportation services to and from the school of origin, if eligible, and not at the cost of the family
Your child has the right to participate in extracurricular activities and all federal, state, or local programs for which he/she is eligible
