Administration of Medication Policy


The Narragansett Regional Schools will cooperate in the administration of medication, but, under Massachusetts General Law, a licensed nurse must have a medication order from a physician, dentist, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant in order to administer any medication, whether is is a prescription drug or an over-the-counter medication.

(*For Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Tums, &/or Benadryl please complete the "Over-the-Counter" medication form only. These forms may be accessed by clicking here, and are also available in the NRHS & NMS Health Offices for grades 5-12.)

Medication to be administered during the school hours must submit to the following conditions:

  1. There must be a written order from a licensed provider for the medication.
  2. There must be a signed consent form from the parent/guardian indicating that the student is to receive the medication.
  3. Nonprescripton medications must be in the original manufacturers container. Prescription mnedications must be in a current pharmacy labeled container and must contain the following information:
    1. Name of student and physician
    2. Name and strength of medication
    3. Date of prescription and date of expiration
    4. Amount of each dose and schedule for administration
      (Medication in anything other than the original or prescription container will not be accepted.)
  4. Medications must be brought to school by an adult.
  5. Medications must be kept in the Health Office and be administered only by the school nurse or designated personnel in her absence.
  6. The initial dose of medication is not to be given in school. (The initial dose is the first dose of a new prescription.)
  7. New physican order and parental consent forms are required at the beginning of each school year.
  8. Medication not meeting these conditions will not be given.
The attached forms MUST be completed and returned to the school nurse before any medications will be administered.

*Please note: Noontime/lunchtime medications will not be administered on 1/2 days of school
