Medicines
The Narragansett Regional Schools will cooperate in the administration of medication, but, under Massachusetts General Law, a licensed nurse must have a medication order from a physician, dentist, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant in order to administer any medication, whether is is a prescription drug or an over-the-counter medication.
(*For Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Tums, &/or Benadryl please complete the "Over-the-Counter" medication form only. These forms may be accessed by clicking here, and are also available in the NRHS & NMS Health Offices for grades 5-12.)
Medication to be administered during the school hours must submit to the following conditions:
- There must be a written order from a licensed provider for the medication.
- There must be a signed consent form from the parent/guardian indicating that the student is to receive the medication.
- Nonprescripton medications must be in the original manufacturers container. Prescription mnedications must be in a current pharmacy labeled container and must contain the following information:
- Name of student and physician
- Name and strength of medication
- Date of prescription and date of expiration
- Amount of each dose and schedule for administration
(Medication in anything other than the original or prescription container will not be accepted.)
- Medications must be brought to school by an adult.
- Medications must be kept in the Health Office and be administered only by the school nurse or designated personnel in her absence.
- The initial dose of medication is not to be given in school. (The initial dose is the first dose of a new prescription.)
- New physican order and parental consent forms are required at the beginning of each school year.
- Medication not meeting these conditions will not be given.
The attached forms MUST be completed and returned to the school nurse before any medications will be administered.
*Please note: Noontime/lunchtime medications will not be administered on 1/2 days of school
