ORGANIZATIONSArrow Yearbook The Arrow staff's main concern is its annual publication of the yearbook. Under the direction of the faculty advisor, the entire staff is kept extremely busy throughout the year preparing the publication of the "Arrow" in June. Art Club The Art Club provides an opportunity for students to display their talents in hallway displays and state-wide Competitions. Band The Band Program at Narragansett provides an opportunity for students in grades 9-12 to participate in ensembles and full band. In addition to playing 3 concerts each year, the band participates in local and out-of-state music festivals. A marching band comprised of students in grades 7-12 performs at home athletic events, local festivals, competitions, parades, and rallies. Students in grades 9-12 participate in the band/marching band as a full credit course. Under special circumstances, students may audit the class and participate in performances with the approval of the director. Chorus The chorus is a mixed voice ensemble, meeting for a full rehearsal twice a week after school and open to all high school students. The chorus performs 3 concerts each year as well as in local and out-of-state music festivals. Students in grades 9-12 participate in chorus as a full credit course. Common GroundThis is a weekly group experience for students to discuss today's issues. These may include such issues as personal stories, family problems, school problems, sexual orientation, drug and alcohol awareness, etc. Common Ground members come together to eat and socialize in an open, safe, and confidential environment. Drama Club The drama club is open to all Narragansett High School students. The club organizes and sponsors student performances of plays and musicals during the school year and participates in and hosts both interclass and interscholastic competitions. Membership consists of students who have an interest in theater and have participated in a production either as part of the cast or technical crew. Earth Bound Newsletter The Earth Bound Newsletter is produced by the Environmental Science CP classes. The newsletter seeks to inform and educate the school community on environmental issues and events and class activities through feature and editorial articles and photographs. Newsletter members may also contribute to the class website, "Gansett Gone Green". Explorers ClubThe Narragansett Explorers Club offers academic field trips to various educational sites in New England. These field trips offer a rich variety of interdisciplinary studies to help students become more aware of their surroundings. Field trip sites include The Boston Aquarium, The Museum of Science, The Museum of Fine Arts, Sturbridge Village, Lowell National Park, Mystic Seaport, and The Computer Museum. The club sponsors one trip in the fall and one trip in the spring. All NRHS students are eligible. 'Gansett Gone Green Environmental Club The Environmental Club participates in community service projects and attends environmental activities and conferences. The Environmental Club attends the Youth CAN Environmental Summit in Boston at MIT. The club is organizing the first Monadnock-Wachusett Student Environmental Summit to collaborate with other environmental students in the region. Students will participate in some of the planning of the new "green" elementary school. Students may also contribute to the class website, "Gansett Gone Green". 'Gansett Weather Team The Environmental Science CP classes collect and record data from the high school's new wireless weather station. Students will use the Apple mini-lab in the environmental classroom to record, edit, and produce a weather program to be broadcast on the school TV station. Gardner News Journalism Club Narragansett students contribute to the Gardner News student section, "The Voice" on a weekly basis. Students write features, editorials, human interest, educational, research-based, and creative articles, as well as submit photographs. Our record of excellence in journalism has placed us first in article submissions for the past three years, and first for the summer months during the past two years. International Club The International Club promotes global awareness and cultural understanding by sponsoring field trips, guest speakers and presenters, as well as ethnic activities. One of the highlights is the annual "International Week". Mu Alpha Theta Mu Alpha Theta is an international and junior college mathematics honor society. It is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Founded in 1954, it has its home office at the University of Oklahoma. The Narragansett Chapter was chartered on April 3, 1962 and is one of the oldest in the world. To qualify for membership in this prestigious organization, a student must have completed six semesters of college preparatory or advanced placement (honors) mathematics with distinction, and be enrolled in a seventh semester of an advanced topics course. The students must have earned a yearly average of at least a B in each of the college preparatory courses. Members may pursue mathematics in a more informal way than in the classroom. Recreational topics may be pursued as well as those of a more advanced nature. A mathematics library of books that are recreational and/or technical is maintained for student investigation. Members going on to college are often eligible for course waivers, scholarships, and other considerations. National Honor Society - Shaman Chapter The National Honor Society was founded in 1921 by members of the National Association of Secondary School Principals to stimulate scholarship and to recognize the qualities of leadership, service, and character in secondary school students. The Shaman Chapter of the National Honor Society, Chapter Number 73461, was established for the Narragansett Regional High School on January 7, 1959. Selection of eligible juniors and seniors is done by a faculty committee which examines each candidate's qualifications of character, leadership, service and scholarship. In scholarship, the candidate must maintain a weighted cumulative average of 88%. Judgment of leadership is based on the candidate's activity as a class or club officer or as a member of a class or club; character is based upon such qualities as honesty, responsibility, fairness, courtesy, tolerance, and cooperation; service is considered on the basis of contributions to the school, class, and community, and upon the candidate's attitude toward service. National Honor Society members will have the privilege of signing out at the beginning of supervised study to go to the library or to an area for which the student has been given teacher permission, and where the student will work under that teacher's supervision. The student understands that responsible behavior is to be exhibited, and that any abuses of this privilege will result in cancellation of the National Honor Society Activity pass. Opus Bono Historiae The John F. Kennedy - Narragansett Chapter of Opus Bono Historiae Social Studies Honor Society is open to students who have maintained an 85 average in history courses in their freshman, sophomore and junior years at Narragansett and are enrolled in a history course during their senior year. Peer MediationPeer Mediators are NRHS students who are trained in mediation. They learn new ways to handle conflicts. In mediation, trained students help their classmates identify the problems behind the conflicts and find solutions. It is not about finding who is right or wrong. Instead, students are encouraged to move beyond the immediate conflict and learn how to get along with each other, an important skill needed in today's world. Common situations such as name-calling, rumors, bumping into students, and bullying have been successfully resolved through peer mediation. Regional Student Advisory Council Established in 1971, the SAC consists of eleven Regional Student Advisory Councils and the State Student Advisory Council. Students from every high school in the state may elect two members to serve on a Regional Council. Regional Council members in turn elect four students to represent them on the State Council. The State Council members elect a Secretary, Vice Chairperson and Chairperson. The Chairperson of the State Student Advisory Council sits as a full voting member on the Massachusetts Board of Education. Students elected to this position may be expected to find their own transportation. Smoking CessationSmoking cessation is a program that is offered to students who would like to try to kick the tobacco habit. They will learn about tobacco and addiction. They will also learn techniques that will help them stop tobacco use when they are ready, using the TAP and the TEG methods of cessation. Student Advisory Committee The Student Advisory Committee consists of five students elected by the student body. The members of the advisory committee elect a chairperson who serves a term of one year. The chairperson shall be an ex-officio, non-voting member of the School Committee, without the right to attend executive sessions unless the right is expressly granted by the School Committee. The chairperson is subject to all School Committee rules and regulations and serves without compensation. Student Council - Senior High The Senior High Student Council is active in planning assemblies, reviewing student government, scheduling activities, and acting as guides at school functions. The council consists of sixteen members and a faculty advisor, elected by classes and the administration, respectively. Students Against Destructive Decisions S.A.D.D. is a program for all students wishing to become aware of and to help win the fight against destructive decisions. The group will strive to educate the community about the severity of drunk driving and destructive decisions. Members will hold fundraisers to benefit certain groups as well as educate students by bringing guest speakers to the school. The group will meet at least one time each month. Varsity Lettermen's Club The Varsity Lettermen's Club is composed of those students who have received a scholastic, band, or athletic varsity letter. With an ultimate goal of encouraging school spirit, the club sponsors such events as Homecoming and Winter Carnival and is also active in other activities. Women in TechnologyWomen in Technology is offered through a partnership of five area schools, Tyco Safety Products, Simplex/Grinnell, and the Greater Gardner Chamber of Commerce to provide the participants with an opportunity for authentic application of classroom learning. The women in the program work with engineers, information technologists, and other personnel at Simplex/Grinnell one day every other week in lieu of regular classroom instruction. They work on real engineering and technology projects and experience many aspects of work in the corporate world. The mission of Women in Technology is to generate interest among females in careers in engineering, math, science, and technology which have traditionally been undersubscribed by women. Students must be in good academic standing and must have a good attendance record to participate in Women in Technology. Narragansett Regional High School grants a ½ credit for successful participation in this program. |
