Health
Mr. Bond
Grades 5 - 8
During the course of the year students learn about how the choices they make can affect their overall health. Students learn that health is not just about eating right and being physically active, but also includes their mental/emotional health, as well as their social health.
Topics range from nutrition, character education, alcohol and drug prevention, violence prevention and for the Eighth Graders, Sexual Education. Starting in the Fifth grade, students begin to discover the systems of the body and how they are interconnected. We pay specific attention to the affects of smoking on the lungs and the Immune System and how hygiene can improve physical health. As students move from Fifth Grade through Eighth Grade, they begin to look more closely at specific behaviors that affect their health and begin to see how their actions affect those around them. By Eighth Grade students are looking at the health of others through food and culture and the factors that influence food security issues.
One constant message through the Middle School Health Curriculum is positive, effective communication, respect and tolerance. No matter what specific topic classes are covering, students are expected to be respectful of themselves, those around them and the school community.
